The Nun (1952)
Our journey begins in the heart of Romania, at a gothic convent where something has gone terribly wrong. Directed by Corin Hardy, The Nun takes you back to 1952, the earliest point in the Conjuring Universe. Here, we meet Sister Irene (played by Taissa Farmiga) and young priest Burke, sent by the Vatican to investigate. Why? Because nuns don't spontaneously commit suicide without something demonic at play. This is also our first real introduction to Valak (The Nun), a face you won't soon forget.
Annabelle: Creation (1955)
From convent to creepy farmhouse, Annabelle: Creation, directed by David F. Sandberg, explores the origins of the infamous Annabelle doll. We learn how grieving parents (Anthony LaPaglia and Miranda Otto) open their home to something that should have remained sealed. Enter a group of orphaned girls, including Linda (Lulu Wilson) and Sister Charlotte (Stephanie Sigman), who unwittingly adopt a demonic toy child. This film subtly connects to The Nun and features some delightful visual links.
The Nun II (1956)
Directed by Michael Chaves, The Nun II picks up where the first film left off, and yes, Valak is still furious. Sister Irene returns, alongside the surviving boy Maurice "Frenchie" (Jonas Bloquet), now trying to build a new life in France. But evil has other plans. This film not only reveals more about Valak but also cleverly builds towards later events in the Warren stories. A small tip: pay close attention to what happens with Maurice. It will make your marathon even scarier later on.
Annabelle (1967)
Fast forward to the '60s, where we follow a young couple, Mia (Annabelle Wallis) and John Form (Ward Horton), who think they've brought home a cute doll. Spoiler (without spoilers): it was not a good purchase. Directed by John R. Leonetti, the film shows us how Annabelle finds her way to the Warren occult museum. The pace is a bit slower, but the atmosphere is perfectly eerie. And if you thought a cradle next to a rocking chair was creepy, wait until you see what unfolds there.
Wolves at the Door (1969)
This film is a bit of an outlier in the universe and isn't always included in every list, but for the seasoned binge-watcher, Wolves at the Door (inspired by the Manson murders) fits right in. The vibe is raw and psychological, and while the supernatural is less prominent, it thematically fits the grim universe James Wan helped build. Think: home invasion meets cult-like horror. A dark interlude before the Warrens take over.
The Conjuring (1971)
Here it is: the introduction of Ed and Lorraine Warren, iconically portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. The Conjuring is where it all began for audiences (released in 2013), but in the timeline, we reach this point halfway through. Directed by James Wan, the film revolves around the Perron family haunting at a remote farmhouse. Think: clapping closets, possessed mothers, and a jump scare that makes you question every clothesline in your yard. This is classic Conjuring tightly directed, chilling, and the start of a larger paranormal web.
Annabelle Comes Home (1972)
After the Warrens, Annabelle takes center stage again. Directed by Gary Dauberman, Annabelle Comes Home is set mostly in one location: the infamous haunted artifact room. Here, the doll is temporarily "safely" stored until, of course, a curious teenager (Katie Sarife as Daniela) decides it's a good idea to touch her. Spoiler alert: it's not. This film is a delightful horror party with multiple entities (like the Black Shuck) and feels like a mini-Avengers for demonic objects.
The Curse of La Llorona (1973)
Based on the weeping woman legend from Latin America, The Curse of La Llorona takes us to Los Angeles. Linda Cardellini plays a social worker who discovers that some legends are indeed real. The connection to the Conjuring Universe? Father Perez, who also appeared in Annabelle. Directed by Michael Chaves, this film may be more loosely connected, but in terms of atmosphere, style, and cursed vibes, it fits perfectly into your marathon.
The Conjuring 2 (1977)
We cross the ocean for one of the strongest entries in the universe: The Conjuring 2, based on the infamous Enfield Poltergeist case in England. Once again, Ed and Lorraine Warren face off against an entity we now know well: Valak. The atmosphere is intense, the acting superb (kudos to Madison Wolfe as Janet), and the connections to previous films make this a key piece in the universe. Plus, this film features one of the most iconic opening scenes in horror from the last decade.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (1981)
The Warrens are back, but this time it's not about a haunting in a house, but a court case. Directed by Michael Chaves, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is based on the Glatzel exorcism case and the infamous Arne Johnson trial. It's a fresh twist in the universe, where the mix of courtroom drama and demonic threat works surprisingly well. And yes, the artifact room makes a brief appearance.
The Conjuring: Last Rites (1982)
The latest film in the universe (for now) is The Conjuring: Last Rites. Although details are still mysterious at the time of writing, we know the story continues where The Devil Made Me Do It left off. The film promises to be a conclusion to the Warren storyline, with Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprising their roles. Expect a film that ties everything together: occult artifacts, conjuring rituals, and perhaps one final confrontation with an old foe.
