Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

It all began with a dancing outlaw and a stolen orb. Guardians of the Galaxy introduces us to Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), aka Star-Lord, and his motley crew of intergalactic misfits: Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel). This movie is a welcome change of pace for the MCU and also marks the official start of the Guardians franchise in the Marvel timeline. Set shortly after Captain America: The Winter Soldier in MCU Phase 2 is all about a mysterious orb (an Infinity Stone), the threatening Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace), and the drama with Yondu Udonta (Michael Rooker). This film is a great place to start if you're planning a Marvel marathon, as it introduces Knowhere, the Milano, and the Marvel cosmic universe. Plus, the soundtrack is instantly iconic.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)

Just months after the first film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 picks up seamlessly. James Gunn really shines when it comes to character development, color palettes, and family dynamics. The film goes deep into Peter Quill's past and introduces Ego the Living Planet (Kurt Russell), a Celestial with a bit of a daddy complex. Gamora and Nebula (Karen Gillan) are still going at it, Rocket's having a hard time with self-worth, and Baby Groot totally steals the spotlight. We also see more of the Ravagers, including Kraglin (Sean Gunn) and Sylvester Stallone's Stakar Ogord. If the first film got you in your feels, get ready for Yondu's words to stick with you. Tissues are a must.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018) & Avengers: Endgame (2019)

These two blockbusters might not be strictly Guardians titles, but they're a must for any Guardians marathon. Both movies are super important for the Guardians and the whole cosmos. In Infinity War, our favorite oddballs team up with Thanos (Josh Brolin) to take on the Infinity Stones, which totally shakes up the Marvel universe. The relationship between Thor and the Guardians is a riot, and what happens in the film affects Volume 3 directly. Endgame is the end of an era and sets a new path for Star-Lord and the gang. Bonus: You'll get your first taste of The Sovereign, Adam Warlock (Will Poulter), and a mysterious mission.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (2022)

Before the grand finale, enjoy a delightful detour with The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. This Disney+ special, set between Endgame and Vol. 3, offers a fun look at the Guardians' holiday lives. Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and Drax are the stars of the show, and their mission on Earth is a mix of hilarious and heartwarming. We've seen how the group has taken over Knowhere, how their dynamics have evolved, and the key details for Vol. 3. Expect new characters, Benatar upgrades, and a hint of Adam Warlock. It's not mandatory, but if you're serious about marathons, it's a must.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)

Finally, the grand finale. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is an emotional, visually stunning conclusion to James Gunn's trilogy. It's set after Endgame and the Holiday Special, and it's all about Rocket, his past, and the ethical issues of genetic manipulation. The High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji) is the main villain, and he's connected to The Sovereign and Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki). His dark experiments hit Rocket hard. The film introduces Adam Warlock and shows how the Guardians have grown since their first adventure. You're going to see some tears, references to earlier movies, and a ending that's both big and personal.

Bonus: Guardians of the Galaxy Animated Series & Video Games

For those not ready to say goodbye to this intergalactic family, check out the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series or give the surprisingly good video game a try. The series, which isn't part of the MCU, has some fun alternative adventures with the same characters. This is great for a Sunday when you're not able to leave town. Square Enix's game is a single-player story where you play as Star-Lord, but you make strategic choices for the team. What was the vibe like? Awesome Mix meets Mass Effect. It's full of humor and heart, with a soundtrack that'll have you dancing in your pajamas. It's not official, but it feels like home.

Set up your own Guardians of the Galaxy marathon!

Whether you watch everything in one day (respect!) or spread it out over a weekend, this viewing order will guide you smoothly through the Marvel cosmic franchise. Start with the original film, then move on to Vol. 2. Take a break with the Avengers films, enjoy the Holiday Special, and finish with Vol. 3. If you're a true die-hard, the animated series and video game are the icing on the cosmic cake. So invite your friends over, put on some popcorn, and let the first notes of "Come and Get Your Love" fill your living room. This Guardians of the Galaxy movie marathon is more than just a journey through space — it's a journey through friendship, loss, growth, and, most importantly, a whole lot of fun.
