Enola Holmes (2020)
Check out Millie Bobby Brown as Enola: young, smart, quirky, and determined to not let Victorian society's expectations hold her back. When her mom, Eudoria Holmes, disappears, Enola starts an adventure full of puzzles, disguises, and unexpected run-ins, including her brothers Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes. Henry Cavill really shines in the role of a more human version of Sherlock Holmes, and Louis Partridge brings a lot of dynamic flair to the character of Tewkesbury, which adds a lot to Enola's journey. This film sets the tone for the rest of the series: it's fast-paced, smart, filled with fourth-wall breaks, and strikes the right balance between mystery and coming-of-age. Director Harry Bradbeer does a great job of bringing Nancy Springer's Enola Holmes books to life on screen. It's a fresh take on the Sherlock Holmes universe, with a female-led mystery vibe that draws you in from the first minute.
Enola Holmes 2 (2022)
Enola Holmes 2 picks up seamlessly, adding a notch to the pace and suspense. Now that she's an official detective, Enola tackles her first real case, which, of course, isn't without its challenges. The film looks at some of the societal themes of the Victorian era, and it's partly based on true events. There's more action, more mystery, and more screen time for Susan Wokoma as Edith (which is great), along with a standout performance by David Thewlis as the sinister Grail. What makes this film really stand out is Enola's character development. She's grown from a girl searching for her mom into a young woman blazing her own trail, not afraid to go up against big names, even Sherlock himself. The relationship between Enola and Sherlock gets even stronger, and we get to see some of the best scenes in the series. With Helena Bonham Carter's return as Eudoria, this sequel is absolutely amazing.
Enola Holmes 3 (TBA)
While Enola Holmes 3 is still in the works at Legendary Entertainment and Netflix, we know enough to include it in your binge plan. Harry Bradbeer is back at the helm, Millie Bobby Brown is set to return as well, and we'll probably see Henry Cavill, Louis Partridge, and Helena Bonham Carter again. The third film is expected to delve deeper into the Holmes family drama and build a larger mystery that could tie the entire franchise together. What can we expect? There'll be more connections to the broader Sherlock Holmes stories, and maybe even a role for Sharon Duncan-Brewster as Mira Troy (a.k.a. a female Moriarty?). And of course, there'll be a mix of clever puzzles, feminist flair, and that delightful London period setting we all love. The hype is real, and even though the film isn't out yet, it's a good idea to check out the first two movies so you're all set for when Enola Holmes 3 hits Netflix.
Why an Enola Holmes Movie Marathon Just Works
The secret to the success of the Enola Holmes franchise is its perfect mix of adventure, mystery, and character development. It's not just about watching a detective solve puzzles; it's about following a young woman's journey of self-discovery in a world that tries to keep her small. Thanks to Millie Bobby Brown's energy, Henry Cavill's charisma, and Helena Bonham Carter's charming chaos, it feels like you're on an adventure with a group of brilliant, slightly chaotic friends. These are perfect films for a binge-watch night, let's be honest. They're gorgeous, with lots of little nods to the Sherlock Holmes world (yes, Baker Street makes an appearance), and they've got that perfect mix of suspense, humor, and heart. Throw in a soundtrack that'll make you feel like you're in Victorian England, and you've got a movie night that's sure to be a hit.
Tips for Your Enola Holmes Binge Night
Plan your marathon like a pro: with preparation. Start early in the evening (the first two films together are just over four hours), make sure you have plenty of tea and English biscuits for the atmosphere, and invite at least one friend who always thinks about how everything connects. Bonus points if someone dresses up as Enola or Sherlock. By the way, make sure you have enough time after Enola Holmes 2 to watch the credits, as the post-credit hints for part 3 are subtle but juicy. If you're interested, you should check out Nancy Springer's Enola Holmes book series. It gives you more context and background stories that aren't in the films yet.
What Makes Enola Holmes Unique Within the Sherlock Universe?
While Sherlock Holmes is usually about one man's intellect, Enola Holmes is about discovering your own strength in a world full of rules. It's a story that's mysterious and empowering. You don't often see a young detective heroine who's as sharp, funny, and emotionally layered as Enola. These movies are fun detective adventures, but they're also important stories about growing up, becoming independent, and family. With stylish direction by Harry Bradbeer (known for Fleabag) and production by Legendary Entertainment, each film is a visual treat. The fourth-wall breaks are cleverly used, the costumes are next level, and the cast is simply irresistible. It's a franchise that's got its serious side, but it's also got room for playfulness and humor, exactly what you want in a good binge-watch.
